Elemental Mercury and Mercury Containing Equipment Removal Event

Obsolete elemental mercury and mercury containing equipment (MCE) are a safety concern and can lead to unintentional spills and exposures.  REHS is providing an opportunity to have elemental mercury and MCE removed from your location at no cost.

This event will take place during the months of May and June and include all types of elemental mercury and MCE, including but not limited to the following:

  • Flasks, Vials and Bottles of Elemental Mercury
  • Thermometers (These can be exchanged with non-mercury type, upon request. Additional information is available at http://rehs.rutgers.edu/lsenv_merc.htm)
  • Barometers, Manometers, Hydrometers, Hygrometers, Psychrometers
  • Medical Blood Pressure Cuffs
  • Switches
  • Thermostats
  • Batteries

Please review your work area or lab and identify the elemental mercury and MCE that are no longer being used.  Please do not attempt to remove wall mounted items or move glass containers containing elemental mercury.  REHS will remove all equipment and containers directly from their current location.

To participate in this event, please email Steve Etzold at hazwaste@rehs.rutgers.edu before June 1st, 2009 to request removal of elemental mercury and MCE from your location.
