In general,
the following uses of radioactive material and/or radiation
require the use of a monitoring badge:
- Radioiodination
protocols using I-125
- The use
of gamma emitters other than I-125
- Cell labeling
experiments using greater than 1 mCi P-32 per experiment
- The use
of X-ray producing devices (excluding electron microscopes)
- Declared
pregnant workers (Fetal Dosimetry Program)

The Nuclear
Regulatory Commission requires the use of individual
monitoring devices by "adults likely to receive,
in one year from sources external to body, a dose in
excess of 10 percent of the limits in 10CFR20.1201(a)."
As the annual whole body limit specified in 10CFR20
is 5000 mrem, the dose at which monitoring is required
is 500 mrem. Approximately 94% of the individuals who
are issued badges at Rutgers and RWJMS do not receive
a measurable dose.
|
The
monitoring badges that are issued at Rutgers University
are not capable of monitoring external radiation
exposures from the following isotopes: H-3, C-14,
S-35.

| If
you would like a badge, but do not meet the criteria above,
one will be provided to you after REHS receives an internal
purchase order from your department for the cost of the
badge(s). The cost of a whole body badge is $2.95 per
quarter, while a ring badge is $2.65 per quarter. |
