Biological Safety Cabinet
Certification Policy
NSF International
Standard 49 entitled "Class II Laminar Flow Biohazard
Cabinetry" and the joint CDC/NIH Guidelines entitled
"Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories"
require the testing and certification of biosafety cabinets
initially upon installation, whenever relocated or repaired,
and annually thereafter.
Rutgers University
has retained the services of ENV Testing and Certification
Co. for the testing, repair, decontamination, and certification
of biosafety cabinets and laminar flow clean air devices in
accordance with the guidelines referenced above.
Biological safety
cabinets used for the manipulation of materials requiring
biosafety level 2 containment, or higher, as specified by:
- The CDC/NIH
Guidelines (referenced above),
- The NIH guidelines
entitled "Guidelines for Research Involving rDNA Molecules,"
and/or
- The Biosafety
Subcommittee of the University Health and Safety Council.
Cabinets used for
manipulation of materials regulated at BL-2 or higher will
be maintained via the REHS standing blanket purchase order.
All other biosafety cabinets and clean air devices will be
maintained via purchase orders generated by the appropriate
department or faculty member.
