Biological
Safety
| Rutgers Environmental
Health and Safety Department (REHS) provides comprehensive
Biosafety Services to the University Community. These
services are intended to ensure that members of the University
Community who store, manipulate, decontaminate, transport,
and discard biohazardous and recombinant materials, do
so in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with
applicable federal, state, and local regulations. These
services are provided by the University Biological Safety
Officer under auspices of the Biosafety Sub-Committee
of the University Health and Safety Council. These services
include: |
- Evaluation
and approval of recombinant DNA research protocols.
- Evaluation
and approval of field tests of transgenic plants.
- Evaluation
and approval of field tests of transgenic organisms/products.
- Evaluation
and approval of biohazardous research protocols.
- Interpretation
of federal, state, and local biosafety regulations.
- Implementation
of Federal OSHA's "Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne
Pathogens", 29CFR1910.1030, including mandatory
training.
- Implementation
of Rutgers University's Biological Safety Guide, including
laboratory safety training specific for biohazardous
research.
- Implementation
of Federal Regulations regarding transportation and
receipt of select infectious agents as described in
42 CFR 73, 9 CFR 121 and 7 CFR 331.
